Demand to change the name of Karnataka to Basavannadu has started gaining momentum. The new name can be after Basavanna, who is highly respected in Karnataka.

In India, names of several cities, districts and roads etc. have been changed in the last few years. There is a fierce battle between the parties in favor and opposition regarding this. One such new case came to light regarding changing the name of Karnataka.

There has been demand to rechristen Karnataka as Basavannadu. Karnataka Minister M.B. Patil said that there is talk of changing the name of Vijayapura district after 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara.

He said that there would be nothing wrong if instead of Vijayapura district the name of the entire state of Karnataka is changed to Basavannadu. It is noteworthy that Basavannadu means the land of Basava. Recently, Deputy Chief Minister of the state D.K. Shivakumar had proposed changing the name of Ramanagara district to 'Bengaluru South'.

In 2014, the Central Government had approved changing the name of 12 cities of Karnataka including the capital of Karnataka to Bengaluru.

During this change, the name of Bijapur was changed to Vijayapura. The Minister said that it was Basavanna who established the world's first Parliament 'Anubhav Mantapa' and he gave the concept of Parliament, that is why we keep saying that our land should become 'Basava Nadu' and we should adopt 'Basava Culture'. Basavanna was a 12th century saint and poet and is highly respected in Kannada society.

Minister M.B. Patil is an MLA from Babaleshwar seat in Vijaypura district. Discussing this in detail, he said that in fact during the Hoysala period this area was known as Vijayapura and then it became Bijapur during the rule of the Adil Shahi dynasty.

After this its name was again changed to Vijayapura. It is noteworthy that Hoysala was a dynasty of ancient South India. It ruled from the tenth to the fourteenth century. Now once again there is a demand to change its name.
