70 people were killed and 500 others injured in a mishap involving 3 trains including Yashwantpur – Howrah superfast express, Coromandel Express and a Goods train at Bahanagar in Balasor district of Odisha around 250 KM from Howrah on Friday.

According to Railway officials many coaches of 12864 Yashwantpur Hawada Superfast Express train which was on way to Howrah, derailed and fell on the up line.

The officials said that the derailed coaches collided with 12841 Coromandel Express. As a result of which several coaches of Coromandel Express also derailed.

The derailed coaches of Coromandel Express also hit the wagons of a Goods train.

Reports said that many people were still trapped inside the derailed coaches. Rescue operations have been launched and the injured were admitted to different hospitals in Balasor and other places.

Accident relief trains have been rushed to the spot along with ambulances and teams of doctors. Gas cutters were being used to break the compartment doors and rescued trapped passengers.

About 50 Ambulances mobilized to site.

CDMO and his team are on the site, directing ambulances and first aid.

50 doctors have been mobilized from other districts.

Team of doctors dispatched from SCB MCH.

Private hospitals in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are also ready to receive patients.

Chief Minister will visit the SRC control room now.

PM Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and said. “Distressed by the train accident in Odisha. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to Railway Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw and took stock of the situation. Rescue ops are underway at the site of the mishap and all possible assistance is being given to those affected.

The railway has announced an ex gratia relief of Rupees 10 lakh for next of the kin of the deaths, 2 lakh for seriously injured people and rupees 50 thousands for those having minor injuries.
