Due to Cyclone 'Michaung', Chennai Meteorological Center has predicted moderate rain, light thunderstorm and lightning in ten districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday morning. There is a possibility of moderate rain with light thunderstorm and lightning in Chennai, Tiruvallur.

India Meteorological Department Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra said that till 9 pm on Monday, the wind speed near the center of the cyclone will be 90-100 km per hour. And in Nellore and Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh it was 70-80 km per hour.

The cyclone is moving towards north, hence the wind speed has gradually reduced to about 50-60 km per hour near Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts of Tamil Nadu. This speed will reduce further near Tamil Nadu coast. From midnight, the 'Michaung' storm will gradually move towards Andhra Pradesh, after which wind speed of 90-100 km per hour can blow between Nellore and Machilipatnam, this situation will continue till Tuesday morning.

Cyclone 'Michaung' is likely to cause uprooting of small and medium trees, large-scale damage to huts and mud houses and partial damage to telephone and electric poles. Inundation and floods can also occur due to cyclone, this has already happened in Chennai. Mahapatra warned that there could be heavy rainfall in cities and towns of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Cyclone 'Michaung' may cause flooding in low-lying areas of south coastal Andhra Pradesh due to a storm surge of 1-1.5 meters. And the impact of the storm will be seen most in Bapatla and Krishna districts. 'Michaung' is likely to make landfall as a severe cyclonic storm, with wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

Five deaths occurred in Chennai on Monday due to rains caused by cyclone 'Michaung'. Chennai Police said that two people died due to electric shock, while one person died after a tree fell on him in the city's posh Besant Nagar area. Two unidentified bodies of a woman and a man have been recovered in two different rain-affected parts of the city.

The situation is expected to improve after 12 PM on Tuesday in Chennai and Greater Chennai region affected by floods and widespread power cuts. Mahapatra said, "We are not expecting very heavy rain after midnight. Only very heavy rain is expected at a few places. As the cyclone moves away from Chennai, the rain and wind speed will reduce. Wind speed will reduce from 50-60 km per hour to 35-45 km per hour.

In view of the cyclone, Chennai airport will remain closed till 9 am on Tuesday. The state government has also declared a public holiday for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts. The government has appealed to private companies to allow employees to work from home as far as possible.
