By-polls Results LIVE: BJP takes lead on Delhi seats, AAP slips to last

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged victorious in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Assam in the Assembly by-elections on Thursday while the Karnataka went to the Congress, leaving Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to suffer a humiliating loss.

The AAP, who was assured of winning the Rajouri Garden Assembly seat, lost it to the BJP. The seat had fell vacant early this year after the party's Jarnail Singh did quit as MLA to contest Punjab Assembly poll against Shiromani Akali Dal patron Parkash Singh Badal.

The ruling Congress, however, retained its hold over Karnataka, winning Nanjangud and Gundlupet Assembly seats. Congress's Kalale N Keshavamurthy defeated his nearest rival V Srinivas Prasad (BJP) by over 21,000 votes in Nanjangud. In Gundlupet, Geetha Mahadevaprasad (Congress) trounced BJP's C S Niranjan Kumar by over 10,000 votes.

Polling had taken place in two Assembly constituencies each in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, one each in West Bengal, Assam, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi on April 9 last.
