New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Income Tax department to reopen the tax case against Bollywood’s superstar Amitabh Bachchan. The case related to his income from a popular TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati.

The order was passed by the Supreme Court in response to the petition filed by the I-T department against the Bombay High Court’s order which provided tax relief to the actor.

The bench comprised Justices Ranjan Gogoi and PC Pant., has set aside the 2001 Bombay high court order.

Highlights:

  • Senior Advocate Shyam Divan appeared for Amitabh Bachchan, while Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar represented the Income Tax Department.
  • According to the reports, the superstar had shown his income from the TV show as Rs 3.23 crore, while the Assessing Officer had assessed Bachchan’s income to be around Rs 26 crore.
  • The tax claim of about Rs 1.66 crore was made on income earned by the senior Bachchan.
