Srinagar: As many as 17 soldiers were martyred while four terrorist were gunned down when some terrorists , believed to be 'fidayeen', attacked Army's 12th brigade headquarters in Uri sector early Sunday morning.

The terrorists entered the base camp after cutting the fencing wires and indulged in indiscreet firing. In retaliation, the soldiers gunned down four of them while 17 soldiers also lost their lives.

Taking it on the top priority , the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh cancelled his visit to Russia and United States and convened an emergent high level meeting to review the situation. He tweeted," Keeping the situation of Jammu and Kashmir in mind and in the wake of terror attack in Uri, I have postponed my visits to Russia and USA."

  • The Indian Army's battalion Headquarters, Uri is in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir ,about 120 kms from the capital of Srinagar.
  • All four terrorist were from Pakistan.

  • According to the police the terrorist were suspected to be fidayeen ( suicide squad).
  • Explosions and firing were heard at the 12th brigade headquarters which is located close to the Line of Control (LoC)
  • The injured soldiers have been airlifted to army hospitals.
  • The security forces have launched intensive search after the operation.

The Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar and Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhag are rushing to Uri in the wake of this incident while the security mechanism had been strengthened in all sensitive areas. It may be recalled that terrorists had tried to infiltrate into Naugam and Poonch sector last week also but their attempts were foiled by the security forces.
