The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi crossed 400 on Tuesday as the national capital drowned in smoke once again after Diwali following fireworks.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall air quality in Delhi remains in the 'severe' category. AQI was recorded at 417 in RK Puram, 410 in Punjabi Bagh, 430 in ITO and 428 in Jahangirpuri.

In fact, the relief that Delhi had got from air pollution due to rain was washed away on Sunday night due to bursting of firecrackers despite the ban.

After Diwali, Delhi woke up to a layer of smoke on Monday morning and the level of air pollution increased once again. According to IQAir, a Swiss company specializing in air quality monitoring, Delhi was the world's most polluted city on Monday, followed by Pakistan's Lahore and Karachi.

The best air quality in eight years was recorded in Delhi on Diwali on Sunday. During this period, the 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 218 at 4 pm. However, due to fireworks being set off late on Sunday night, pollution levels increased rapidly amid low temperatures.

An official of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the statutory body responsible for formulating strategies to reduce pollution in Delhi-NCR, said, "It is clear that the increase in pollution levels after Diwali is due to two factors - bursting of crackers and burning of stubble."

Fireworks are the main cause in this case." In the 24 hours ending at 4 pm on Monday, AQI increased from 186 to 349 in Ghaziabad, from 193 to 349 in Gurugram, from 189 to 363 in Noida, from 165 to 342 in Greater Noida and from 172 to 370 in Faridabad.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, a sharp increase in air pollution levels was observed in cities across the country on the day after Diwali. AQI increased from 235 to 385 in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, 152 to 361 in Kaithal, Haryana, 180 to 380 in Bathinda, Punjab, 211 to 346 in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, 260 to 380 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha and 214 to 355 in Cuttack.
