There is no dearth of people across the world who like television content for entertainment.

According to the Statista Consumer Insight Survey, in terms of content, people in India like to watch comedy on TV the most in the world. After this they turn to TV to watch sports related programes.

After Indians, citizens of France, America and Spain also have more interest in programs related to comedy. Even in this era of OTT platforms, the global number of TV viewers is expected to increase by 200 million in the next five years.

More than half of Britons are more interested in watching documentaries and drama on TV. Here the older population likes watching TV more than the youth. In Britain, people over the age of 65 watch about five hours of TV a day, while 16-24 year old engage in this media for an average of less than an hour. The number of households in the UK with a TV increased from 26 million in 2017 to more than 27 million in 2021 as smart TVs and connected TVs became the devices of choice. Like Britain, the trend of watching documentaries is highest in Finland and Germany also.

The preferences of TV viewers differ depending on geographical regions. For example, among the 56 countries included in the survey, Brazil was the only nation which ranked local and national news first in terms of TV content, while sports came second. Here 52 percent people watch news channels on TV to stay updated. More than 75 percent of the citizens in this country watch traditional TV, on which programs are broadcast through cable or satellite.

Despite the rapid expansion of digital media, India remains one of the few international markets where TV continues to grow. Viewers in India are now watching 53 minutes more TV every week than last year. The share of women in the total increased number of TV viewers is 59 percent. Young viewership in the age group of 15-30 years has seen a huge growth. The increase in the number of TV viewers in the country is from almost all regions including big and small cities, rural areas.
