According to a study of Lancet magazine, about 1.34 crore children were born prematurely in 2020 all over the world which means these children had to leave their mother's womb and come into the world before 37 weeks of pregnancy. One out of 10 children is born in the world prematurely.

This study was conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine states that 20 percent which means 30.2 Lakh of the total children born prematurely, in India.

Preterm or premature babies are those who are born into this world without completing the 37-month pregnancy cycle. It is divided into three parts:

Extremely preterm (born before 28 weeks)

Very preterm (born between 28 and 32 weeks)

Moderate to late preterm (born between 32 and 37 weeks)

Reason behind preterm:

Get pregnant in short age.

Infected mother

Smoking and Alcohol

Heart disease

Diabetes and Blood pressure

Underweight and overweight

According to the World Health Organization, 24 lakh premature babies born in 2020, died in the first month of birth. Every day 6700 newborns are closing their eyes. The death ratio of premature babies had risen after 1990, which had increased from 40 percent to 47 percent now.

How to prevent them:

  • Give Thermal protection to the baby.
  • Take care of the umbilical cord and clean it properly.
  • Start breastfeeding as soon as possible.
  • Take care of them properly.
