Did you ever find a child who stutters during his conversation? It is not a mental problem but it can be solved with the time.

According to a research, eight percent of children stammer at one time or the other. But in many children stuttering gets cured with time but in some children, there is no improvement.

Stuttering in a child is obviously a cause of concern for parents and they try to find ways to help their child.

Stuttering levels:

Many people take the help of speech therapy to reduce the problem of stuttering. It is categorized in three levels:

  • Mild stammering
  • Moderate stammering more than usual
  • Severe stuttering

Children who have mild stuttering problems can recover soon. Children with moderate stuttering have to take therapy for 4-5 months, after which considerable improvement is seen.

Severe cases are a bit challenging and there is scope for improvement of 30 to 40 percent. But along with therapy, the efforts and expenses of the children are also important.

Speech Therapist Shishupal, The Learning Hub said "It has been seen many times that the self-confidence of people who stutter often falls. It remains somewhere in their mind that if I say something wrong, people will laugh at me."

What things to keep in mind:

  • According to Britain's National Health Service, whenever you meet someone who stutters, keep these things in mind.
  • Don't try to finish their sentences quickly.
  • Be patient, do not interrupt them while speaking.
  • Don't ask them to talk fast or slow.
  • Pay attention to what they say, not how they say it. Make eye contact with them.
  • When talking to a child, talk slowly. Use short sentences. Speak in simple language.
  • Give them full time to understand what you say.

Britain's National Health Service says that there can be many reasons for stuttering. Sometimes fear can also be a reason for this. The condition of stuttering can be improved.

From children to adults can take help of therapy. Although the sooner you start the better, you can take therapy at any age.
