Nowadays youth are using social media like drinking water to keep themselves 'socially-hydrate'. Social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, X, and WhatsApp can be found in everyone's phone whether they are young generation (Genz) or old age.

The reason behind this is that it keeps up-to-date as per time and location. That is why people are becoming more addicted to it.

Recently a survey was conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Rohtak. According to the survey, youth are using social media for an average of 7 hours every day. Women are about 20 minutes more active on social media than men.

The data shows that youth are using 32.27% Instagram, 28.32% WhatsApp, 19.78% Snapchat, 17.20% Facebook and 3.43% other applications.

But it affects not only physically but mentally also.

According to a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania in America in 2018, people who use social media excessively feel lonely and isolated from the world in real life. They may also suffer from problems like lack of sleep, stress, poor memory, and poor performance. It also increases physical problems like headache, muscle tension, etc.

A survey was conducted by America's Nielsen company regarding what people do on social media for hours. Which found that most people use social media just to check the updates of what is happening. After which people send messages or emails to the people around them.

How to avoid this situation:

  • Take a break for some time.
  • You can also uninstall the applications for some time.
  • Social sites like Instagram, have a feature called ‘Take a Break’ which sets a fixed time for a few hours or a day in which the account will be closed for that period.
