Doctors at a private hospital in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu have succeeded in performing all ceramic total knee replacement for the first time in India. It is made of non-metallic components. Professor S. Rajasekaran, Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of the hospital and the entire surgical team along with Dr. Michael Wagner of Germany performed this successful surgery on Tuesday. Clinicians claim that this will provide minimal wear, tissue management, and excellent joint tracking, thereby increasing the lifespan of the prosthesis.

The hospital said that the purpose of total knee replacement is to keep patients walking for a long time. This will provide them with freedom from pain for decades and possibly a lifetime and the ability to function normally. However, it also has some challenges, for example, in some circumstances, metal abrasion (ions and nano particles) can lead to adverse consequences, which can lead to implant failure.

The BPK-S Integration Ceramic Knee System is claimed to be the world's first ceramic knee system to offer a completely metal-free treatment option. This hypoallergenic all ceramic knee system is described as tissue compatible.

A form of knee implant called a ceramic knee replacement is used in orthopedic surgery to replace a worn-out or damaged knee joint. It is constructed out of biocompatible ceramic materials, usually a mix of zirconia and alumina, which are incredibly strong and long-lasting.

The damaged knee joint components are removed during surgery, and the ceramic knee implant is then placed precisely to restore joint function. Ceramic implants offer superior stability and a smoother range of motion since they are made to precisely resemble the knee's natural movement and structure.

People who choose a ceramic knee replacement may benefit from less implant wear, increased durability, and greater joint function.
