Whangarei(Mew Zealand): The Under-19 Cricket World Cup, which got underway on saturday, saw the first upset when Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by five wickets.

In Group D match played here today, Pakistan scored 188 runs in stipulated 50 overs but spirited Afghanistan got better of the rival scoring required runs with 15 balls to spare. On other matches Papua New Guinea was annihilated by Zimbabwe in Group B match while Bangladesh defeated minnows Namibia comprehensively in another Group C match.

In Group A match, the fine century by Finn Allen saw New Zealand home with an impressive wicket win against West Indies. Playing first, WI scored 233 for 8 in 50 overs which NZ surpassed at the loss of just two wickets with 63 balls to spare.

India , one of the favourites in the tournament, will start its campaign with Group B match against formidable Australia.

A total of 16 teams are participating in the junior cricket World Cup final of which will be played on February 3 next. The teams are divided among four groups with India sharing the group with Australia, Bangladesh and Namibia.
