‘Visaranai’ becomes India’s official entry to Oscars 2017

New Delhi: Tamil film ‘Visaranai’, which had bagged three national awards, has become India’s first official entry to Oscars 2017 for Academy Awards 2017 in the Foreign Language Film category.

The film is adapted from on M. Chandrakumar’s novel ‘Lock Up’ and revolves around police brutality.

According to secretary general of Film Federation of India Supran Sen, ‘Visaranai’ was picked among 29 movies which were also contenders.

It is not the first time that any Tamil film has been selected for the Oscars. Other flicks in the past including Jeans, Indian, Kurithipunal, Devar Magan, Anjali, Nayagan, Deiva Magan were also the entrants.

The 89th Academy Awards event is set to take place in February 2017 in Los Angeles.

Other Highlights:

  • ‘Visaranai’ is directed by Vetrimaaran.
  • Produced by Dhanush, it stars Samuthirakani, Attakathi and Anandhi in the lead.
  • The film had hit the theatres on September 10.
