Mumbai: Indian film actress Sushmita Sen has always been her own woman. She once said, "People lose character, I just gained weight." She chose such simple words to put all her critics to rest. She has always defied conventions at all stages of her life.

She was crowned Femina Miss India in 1994 and she later won the Miss Universe 1994 contest at the age of 18. Sen is the first Indian woman to win the competition. She was doing things as a teenager which a grown adult would have been proud of.

She has always been the country's pride. Primarily known for her work in Hindi films; she has also appeared in Tamil and Bengali films and has won a Filmfare Award. Sushmita Sen never did things just for the sake of doing it.

Her winning the Miss Universe Pageant made it easy to take a shot at the movies. She acted in many a movies but most of them were commercial failures.

It never stopped her though, her personality was far bigger than that. More than movies, it was her personal decision which surprised the world. She adopted a baby girl at an age of 25. To adopt a baby girl at such a young afe was exemplary.

People were quick to point out stuff against this as well. She went doing things her own pretty ways. One thing let to another and in 2010, she adopted another baby girl. That girl was an ailing child. Doctors and all others advised her against adopting that kid.

Sushmita Sen went with her motherly instincts decided to stick by her no matter what happens. Sushmita took the opinion from other doctors and stayed on her decision. This decision of her's was another one of those where she showed the world- how a woman can rule the world and that too on her own terms. She believes that success and failure are inevitable.
