Varanasi: Protest picked up pace ahead of 'Padmavati' release on December 1 when a group of women on Sunday staged a protest against the film here, burning effigy of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

They alleged the filmmakers of distorting historical facts in the film which features Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in the lead.

In the lines of Supreme Court's refusal to grant a stay on the screening of 'Padmavati', Yogi Adityanath government assured of providing proper security to theatres in Uttar Pradesh for safe screening.

The protesters were activists of International Kshatriya Veerangana Mahasabha, an organisation representing Rajput women. "We will not allow distorted facts to be shown in the film at any cost," said a protester.

"They are trying to defame Padmavati by distorting historical facts. It is not acceptable,"another protester said.

The flak against the film seems unstoppable with various communal groups launching protest in various states of the country.

It may be mentioned here that Rani Padmini or Padmavati was queen of Chittorgarh.
