Indian-Origin Student Arrested at Protest, Banned from Princeton University

Every year, around 1 lakh Indian students pursue higher studies in Australia, making it a favored destination. However, recent developments have sparked concerns among students considering Australian universities. Government data reveals that in 2022, 1,00,009 Indian students were present in Australia.

In 2019, 73,808 Indian students chose Australia for their studies, with numbers dropping to 33,629 in 2020 and 8,950 in 2021. Despite being a popular study-abroad choice, recent changes in Australia's visa landscape have raised uncertainties among potential students.

Reports from Australia suggest a surge in visa rejections due to some universities retracting admission offers. While the University of Wollongong and La Trobe University face accusations of withdrawing offers, both deny these claims. Deakin University assures it is actively conducting admissions for the academic year 2024.

According to study-abroad experts, there's anticipation of a decline in migrant intake, affecting international students. Gaurav Batra, founder of Infinite Group, notes increased rejection rates and stringent guidelines, causing uncertainty for prospective students.

In response, some students are reconsidering their plans. Concerns over visa rejection, coupled with recent news, have prompted students to explore alternative options like New Zealand, perceived as a safer choice with a higher guarantee of study and post-study work visas.

Experts attribute visa refusals to factors like poorly written GTE statements, failure to meet academic requirements, and providing false information. The GTE statement, crucial for visa applications, demonstrates the intent to study temporarily and return home. Rohit Sethi, director at ESS Global, emphasizes the importance of meeting academic requirements and providing authentic information.

Recent changes to Australian student visa policies further impact applicants. In December 2023, the government increased English language requirements for student and graduate visas. Minimum IELTS scores rose, affecting both Temporary Graduate and student visas.

A new genuine student test replaced the existing GTE requirement, acknowledging post-study migration pathways. The government tightened scrutiny on high-risk student applications and addressed issues with unscrupulous education providers. Additionally, the savings required for a student visa increased to $24,505.

As Indian students navigate these changes, understanding the evolving landscape of Australian education policies becomes crucial. The concerns around visa rejections emphasize the need for thorough preparation, including well-crafted statements and meeting updated requirements. Stay informed, explore alternatives, and approach the application process with diligence to enhance your chances of studying in Australia.
