In the wake of recent tragic incidents, IIT Kanpur is proactively addressing student well-being with a multifaceted approach. The institute's commitment to mental health encompasses a range of services, from a dedicated counseling center to weekly visits by psychiatrists, and innovative welfare initiatives.

IIT Kanpur's Institute Counselling Service (ICS) is at the forefront, staffed by six professional counselors, clinical psychologists, student volunteers, and faculty advisors. Additionally, the institute collaborates with three recognized psychiatrists who conduct weekly visits to the campus, ensuring that students requiring medication receive timely attention.

To further strengthen its support system, IIT Kanpur has taken additional steps post the recent tragedies. The counseling team is being reinforced with more counselors and hostel managers to cater to the medical needs of students. The institute is actively working on the following welfare initiatives:

Strengthening PG Core Counseling Team: Enhancing response times and providing personalized mental health support.

Department-Level Discussions: Regular forums to identify and address issues of academic stress, isolation, and other difficulties faced by students at an early stage.

Peer Support for New Students: Senior PG students will guide new students, easing their transition and reducing feelings of alienation.

Faculty Guide for Non-Academic Matters: A faculty guide will maintain open communication channels for non-academic concerns, fostering a supportive environment.

Interactive Hostel-Level Events: Engaging students in positive and interactive events to build community support.

Mental Health Awareness Programmes: Conducting programs every semester to raise awareness and promote mental well-being.

In addition to these welfare initiatives, IIT Kanpur has instituted a Review Committee with the responsibility of promptly addressing student concerns with empathy. The committee gathers inputs from various sources, including individual departments, alumni, and concerned individuals, and provides specific recommendations to the institute's administration.

Building on last year's academic reforms, IIT Kanpur continues to enhance the student experience. The introduction of a flexible PhD program, increased financial assistance, streamlined admission processes, and options for students to exit the program with an MS degree reflect the institution's commitment to holistic student development.

IIT Kanpur's proactive measures underline its commitment to fostering a positive and supportive academic environment. By prioritizing mental health, strengthening counseling services, and implementing innovative welfare initiatives, the institute aims to provide comprehensive support to its student community.
