Energy and city gas distribution company Adani Total Gas (ATGL) has announced the launch of a pilot project of 'Green Hydrogen Production and Blending'.

The company made this announcement at a time when global leaders are gathering in UAE for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) from 30 November to 12 December. ATGL will start this project in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Green hydrogen (GH2) will be mixed with natural gas using new technology. Then it will be provided to more than 4 thousand domestic and commercial customers.

This pilot project is expected to start in the first quarter of the next financial year (Q1 FY24-25). As regulatory approvals are received, the share of green hydrogen in natural gas will gradually be increased to 8% or more.

After successful completion of the pilot project, hydrogen blended fuel will be supplied in large parts of the city and other license areas of AGTL in a phased manner. According to the study, hydrogen blend up to 8% can reduce carbon emissions by 4%.

With this pilot project, AGTL intends to partner with various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, to share its first-hand learnings and develop the ecosystem for hydrogen blending in city gas distribution in India. This will help in capturing and sharing the operational aspects and compatibility of blended fuel with existing infrastructure.

Suresh P Mangalani, CEO, AGTL, said, “We are committed to building environmentally sustainable operations. This project is part of our dedication towards building infrastructure in the country to establish India as an energy independent country by 2047. This project will make a significant contribution in reducing our carbon emissions.

AGTL has licenses to retail CNG for vehicles, piped cooking gas for households and pipeline gas for industries in 38 geographical areas (GAs). The company has city gas distribution network in Ahmedabad and Vadodara in Gujarat, Faridabad in Haryana and Khurja in Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh.

Apart from this, development of Allahabad, Chandigarh, Ernakulam, Panipat, Daman, Dharwad and Udham Singh City Gas Distribution has been entrusted to a group of Adani Total Gas Limited and Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
