At least 12 people were killed and 14 others suffered serious burns when a bus caught fire after colliding with a dumper in Madhya Pradesh's Guna district on Wednesday night.

According to the police sources the incident took place on Guna-Aaron Road when there was a head-on collision between a private bus and a dumper. He said that the injured were taken to Guna District Hospital for treatment.

Eye witnesses said that the most of the passengers were asleep when the tragedy occurred. They were caught unawares. They also did not get chance to come out of the bus after it caught fire, the locals said.

Guna district Superintendent of Police said that 12 passengers on board the bus died and 14 others sustained burn injuries in the fire incident. Police said that when the accident occurred around 9 pm, the bus was going towards Aaron, while the dumper was going towards Guna. The SP said that there were around 30 passengers in the bus at the time of the incident and four of them somehow managed to get out of the bus and went home.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the incident and announced an assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. He also ordered an investigation into the incident.

In a message on social media platform 'X', Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the incident as 'tragic'. He said, 'Immediately after receiving information about the incident, I spoke to the Collector and SP (Superintendent of Police) and directed them to start relief and rescue operations.' He expressed grief over the death of the passengers.
