Two lovers, who were said to be cousins, allegedly killed themselves by jumping into a canal in Chamu area in Rajasthan.

According to the police sources, the lovers, Kewal Ram and Savita Devi, (names changed), both residents of the same village, died by suicide in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Their bodies were recovered around five kilometers away from their native village by the police later in the day, sources said.

Police said that Kewal and Savita were distant cousins and they had been having an affair for the past three years. Their family members had no idea about their affair.

Sources said that Savita had recently been married to a youth from a nearby village a few months back.

Savita had come to her parent’s house in the ongoing Shravana month as per the traditions. Her husband had also reached there on Tuesday to take her back to his home, the sources added.

Savita’s family members said that she woke up after midnight on Wednesday and told her mother that she was going out to answer the call of nature. The family members launched a search operation after she did not return home even after several hours.

They later lodged a missing report with the police also. The locals later found their bodies floating in the canal and informed the cops.

Police sources said that Kewal and Savita had planned the suicide and as per the same they travelled to the canal bank on the motor bike of a mutual friend in the midnight of Wednesday. They later jumped into the flooded canal and drowned.

The family members of the duo said that their marriage would not have been possible as the two were distant cousins. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
