Army jawan kills wife, daughter in Jodhpur

In a shocking incident, an army jawan allegedly killed his wife and two-year-old daughter in Jodhpur town in Rajasthan.

According to the police sources the jawan, identified as Ram Prasad, a Nayak in the Indian Army, strangled his wife and daughter to death before settling them ablaze at his official residence at Hamid Bagh in Jodhpur.

The half-burnt bodies of the wife and the daughter were recovered from their room on Sunday. Ram Prasad however claimed that the two had died in a fire caused by a short circuit and denied having killed them.

After sustained interrogation, however, Ram Prasad admitted to killing the two, police sources added. Ram Prasad first strangled his wife and daughter to death and later poured kerosene oil on their bodies and then set them ablaze.

Police said that the jawan was produced before a local court on Tuesday and was remanded to police custody for four days.

Police said that the motive behind the killings was yet to be ascertained. ‘’We have registered a case in this regard….we are investigating the incident,’’ said a senior police official in Jodhpur.

The police sources said that the family feud could be one of the reasons behind the shocking murders.

The neighbours of the jawan said that they had never seen the husband and wife fighting. They expressed shock and dismay over the incident and said that they were surprised that he could have perpetrated such a ghastly crime.

The neighbours were particularly sad over the killing of the two-year-old girl. They also demanded stern punishment for the army jawan saying that such a crime must not go unpunished. Police said that they were gathering the evidence and ensuring that he gets the strictest punishment by the court.
