In a shocking incident, an 80-year-old man was allegedly axed to death by a youth in Ajmer district of Rajasthan, according to police sources.

Police said that the youth, who appeared to be in a mentally unstable state and identified as Ramavtar Raigar, attacked the old man, identified as Harlal Raiger while the latter was returning home after paying obeisance at a temple at Bhairu Gate locality on Saturday, with an axe.

The eyewitness said that Ramavtar hit the old man several times with the axe inflicting serious injuries on the latter.

The crowd that had assembled there after witnessing the gory incident could not gather the courage to go near the assailant as he threatened to kill anyone who dared to intervene, sources said.

The youth later climbed the top of the temple carrying the blood-stained axe and challenged the people to fight him.

A police team that reached the spot after being informed had a tough time controlling the frenzied youth and arresting him.

Police said that Ramavtar had a grudge against the old man and that he wanted to punish the latter for what he considered conspiring to kill his (Ramavtar) father several years ago.

The locals said that the youth had earlier also threatened to kill the old man on several occasions. It was not clear if he had also tried to kill the old man. The local people also demanded stern punishment for the youth. ‘’He should get capital punishment,’’ demanded a resident of the locality.

‘’Ramavtar thought that Harlal Raigar was behind the death of his father though his father had died of natural causes,’’ said a police official.

Police said that the youth had been arrested and sent to jail. ‘’We have registered a case in this connection and investigating the matter,’’ said the official.
