Domestic air traffic soars in July, IndiGo remains on top

According to the official records, India's domestic air traffic in July also recorded a surge of 24.7 per cent, as compared to the same month last year. Domestic airlines carried 1.21 crore passengers in July.

Domestic air traffic soared to new heights in July 2023 surpassing the previous records even as IndiGo remained the top choice of the flyers during this period.

Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-July 2023 were 8.82 crore against 6.70 crore during the corresponding period of previous year, an increase of nearly 32 per cent on a year-on-year basis.

According to the official records, India's domestic air traffic in July also recorded a surge of 24.7 per cent, as compared to the same month last year. Domestic airlines carried 1.21 crore passengers in July.

However, the domestic air traffic in July plunged over 3 per cent on a month-on-month basis. Passengers carried by domestic airlines in June 2023 were 1.24 crore.

The market share of IndiGo jumped 20 basis points to 63.4 per cent from 63.2 per cent in June. However, in July, IndiGo flew 76.8 lakh passengers, as opposed to 78.9 lakh in June.

Meanwhile, Air India’s market share came in at 9.9 per cent against 9.7 per cent in June, a surge of 20 basis points on a month-on-month basis. However, the airline flew lesser passenger at 11.98 lakh passengers in July, against 12.13 lakh in June.

SpiceJet, on the other hand, saw its market share drop by 20 basis points to 4.2 per cent from 4.4 per cent. Vistara's market share in July surged 30 basis points to 8.4 per cent from 8.1 per cent in June.

The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for July 2023 came in at 0.75 per cent, with India one Air seeing the most number of cancellations among its peers at 56.79 per cent.

A total of 349 passenger-related complaints were received by the scheduled domestic airlines in July. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for July had been around 0.29. The major reasons for complaints were related to flight problems.
