A lamp is lit in the evening on the day of Narak Chaturdashi. It is believed that by worshiping Yamraj on Dhanteras, family members are blessed with long life and health. 13 lamps should be lit on the day of Dhanteras and 14 lamps should be lit on the day of Narak Chaturdashi. It is believed that one can be saved from going to hell by lighting a lamp in every corner of the house on the day of Narak Chaturdashi.

Where to keep the earthen lamps?

On the day of Narak Chaturdashi, in the evening, light the first lamp at the main door of the house and the second lamp in the temple of your house. After this, light the third lamp in the temple of the house in front of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.

Tulsi and Peepal:

Place the fourth lamp on the Tulsi square and light the fifth lamp under the Peepal tree. Keep the sixth lamp in a secluded place while the seventh lamp is lit near the dustbin.

Bathrooms and terrace:

Light the eighth lamp in the bathroom while keep the ninth lamp in a corner on the terrace. Keep the tenth lamp in the kitchen and the eleventh lamp in a window or balcony of the house. Light the twelfth lamp on the stairs and the thirteenth at a water area.
