Swedish photographer Alex Dawson has been awarded Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024 for his photograph 'Whale Bones'. The photo shows a diver discovering the skeleton of a minke whale under the Greenland ice sheet.

Alex Mustard, who chairs the awards judging panel, told the BBC that Whale Bones was photographed in the most extreme conditions possible, with a breath-holding diver descending beneath the Greenland ice sheet to view the bodies. The diver's suit and torch give a 'visiting alien' feel. This picture tells a complete story in itself.

Dawson posted about his big win on Instagram. In his post he wrote, "I am honored to be awarded the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024 award in London this weekend with my winning photo 'Whale Bones'. "This photo was submitted in the wide angle category with freediving mode."
