Allahabad HC refuses to interfere in Atiq's jail transfer order

Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday declined to interfere with the state government's order by which mafia turned politician and former Member of Parliament Atiq Ahmad was transferred from Naini Central Jail, Allahabad to District Jail Deoria.

Hearing an application moved by Atiq Ahmad, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Dilip Babasaheb Bhosale and Justice Yashwant Varma, however, on a request made by Atiq's counsel, deferred the hearing of this application till April 7, 2017. Now this application will also be heard along with the writ petition relating to SHUATS

assault case, where the next date fixed is April 7, 2017.

Former Member of Parliament Atiq Ahmad is an accused in SHUATS assault case. Atiq, who was elected MLA several times from city west assembly constituency of Allahabad, was subsequently elected MP on Samajwadi Party ticket from Phulpur parliamentary constituency of Allahabad and severed as parliamentarian from 2004 to 2009.

It may be recalled the present government has transferred mafias from their respective jails, where they are presently lodged, to some other jail. Following this order, Atiq has been shifted from Naini Central Jail to Deoria district jail.

On December 14, 2016, Atiq along with his henchmen had allegedly barged into the SHUATS campus in Naini area of Allahabad and assaulted the staff members of the institute for taking action against two students who were debarred from taking examinations after they were caught cheating.

Subsequently, on February 10, 2017, the high court had summoned criminal history of Atiq. Thereafter, the police arrested the former MP on February 11,2017. He was then remanded into 14-day judicial custody and sent to jail.
