Lucknow: Bollywood actor Vidya Balan did not hide her penchant for 'sarees' which she says is her favourite dress but little did she realise that her colour of 'sari' would create a furore in the political circles.

Vidya Balan , who was here to be projected as brand ambassador of the 'Samajwadi Pension Yojana' in Uttar Pradesh, featured in an advertisement of the state government's scheme. In the advertisement, she is shown donning a red and green coloured 'sari' which happens to be the symbol of ruling SP.

Soon after the advertisement was aired, the detractors of Samajwadi Party raised objection on the colour of her dress alleging Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was misusing government's publicity funds to promote his party instead of government's schemes.

In fact, Akhilesh , on many occasions in the past, had claimed that his government had taken many pro-people steps but never went overboard to publicise them in the larger interest of the public service. This time, however, he is caught on the contradictory note as Vidya Balan was seen as brand ambassador of government scheme wearing symbolic colour of the party.

Samajwadi Party seeks to downplay the whole controversy saying it was just a coincidence. One Uttar Pradesh minister Ravidas Mehrotra, however, defends the party and the government in a different way saying if the scheme belongs to SP government then the publicity of the party is fully justified.
