Kanpur: Mangal, the oldest orangutan of the country, died due to age related complications in Kanpur Zoo of Uttar pradesh on Saturday sending shock waves among the animal lovers.
The 36-year old Mangal, born and brought up in Kanpur Zoo, was nick-named as 'Bhashma Pitamah' because of his old age and was very popular among the zoo staff and visitors owing to his friendly demeanour.
About Mangal
- He was born to his mother Dayang and father Avang on November 13, 1979.
- His parents were brought here from Bristol zoo on October 28,1976.
- Mangal was an amiable orangutan.
- The zoo staff always found him as a very disciplined and wise animal.
- Was fond of ground nuts and ice cream.
A lonely Mangal
- His mate Dua, a female orangutan, was brought here in 1995
- She died at the age of 34 in 2005.
- Mangal became lonely after the death of Dua.
Zoo staff is grieved
- The entire zoo staff in Kanpur was grieved over his death.
- An autopsy was done on his body before cremating him.
