Australian team announced for India tour; Mitchell Starc ruled out

Update: 2017-08-18 13:32 GMT

Sydney: In a relief for Indian batsman, fierce Australian speedster Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI and T20I series in India, while James Faulkner and Nathan Coulter-Nile have been recalled in the squad, said Cricket Australia on Friday.

Faulkner's has been included in the ODI side after he was surprisingly dropped from Australia's Champions Trophy team. Coulter-Nile has been given a chance in both, ODI and T20I sides, to fill in the place of Starc.

Left-arm paceman Jason Beherendorff's has also been included in the T20Is.

Faulkner, who was named player of the match in the 2015 World Cup final, has been recalled looking at his past record in the subcontinent conditions and his Indian Premier League (IPL) experience.

"James is a solid one-day campaigner and is very familiar with subcontinent conditions, coming off a very good tour of Sri Lanka last year," said chief selector Trevor Hohns, adding, "We hope that he will take his chance in returning to the one-day side."

CA has dropped all-rounder Moises Henriques, injured batsman Chris Lynn, John Hastings, James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc from the upcoming trip of India.

"We have reviewed the progress of Mitchell's right foot and the healing process has been slower than we would have liked," team physiotherapist David Beakley said.

"Consequently, in order to ensure his best possible preparation for the Ashes, he will be unavailable for the tour of India and will continue his rehab at home with an aim to have him play for New South Wales in the domestic one-day cup," he added.

CA has also recalled veteran all-rounder Dan Christian and wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine in the T20 squad.

"We believe the panel has selected a strong squad to face the tough Indian conditions that has the right mix of pace and spin," chief selector Trevor Hohns said.

Marcus Stoinis has also been recalled in the ODI squad. He had been out of the team following an injury he suffered during the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Steve Smith will continue to lead the side with David Warner as the vice-captain, during the five ODIs and three T20Is in India between September 17 and October 11.

Australian team is currently gearing up for their first ever Bangladesh trip in more than 11 years. There they will play two Test matches, with first at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium scheduled to begin on August 27 and the second at Chittagong on September 4.

Australia ODI squad: Steve Smith (captain), David Warner (vice-captain), Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade and Adam Zampa
