Amritsar: Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Navjot Singh Sidhu will contest the Punjab Assembly elections 2017 from Amritsar constituency on Congress' ticket, announced the party state president Captain Amrinder Singh on Friday.

"Sidhu is the Congress' candidate from Amritsar constituency. He will soon join the party unconditionally," said Amrinder Singh.

On Wednesday, Amrinder Singh had claimed that the cricketer-turned-politician will join Congress unconditionally.

On rumours of Sidhu being offered the deputy chief minister's post in Punjab if Congress comes to power in the upcoming assembly elections, Amrinder said that the decision would be taken by the party national president and vice president.

"His professional commitments have caused the delay in his joining and he wants to conclude all professional commitments before foraying into election gear," Amarinder had said in New Delhi.
