New Delhi: The scorching heat is driving a high demand for air conditioners (ACs), and people are using them to the extent of their capacity to find relief. Many consider ACs to be "lifesavers" during such extreme heat. However, while many run their ACs, they remain concerned about the rising electricity bills. Numerous online messages suggest that setting the AC temperature to 26 degrees Celsius saves the most electricity, and many have tried this tip.

**What Should You Do?**

Firstly, understand that electricity consumption is linked to the set temperature of the AC. It has been calculated that if the temperature setting drops from 26 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius, electricity consumption can increase by 47.89%. The lower the set temperature, the higher the electricity consumption.

- **Power Consumption and Horsepower**: Remember, electricity consumption also depends on the horsepower of the AC's compressor. The higher the horsepower, the quicker it will cool, but it will also consume more electricity.

- **External Temperature**: Electricity consumption is also related to the external temperature. A significant difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures can increase electricity usage. Typically, if the temperature difference is around 4 degrees Celsius, the AC does not consume much electricity.

**How to Save Electricity?**

- **Circulate Air Efficiently**: Rotate the AC blades upwards to circulate the air. Cold air is heavy, so it spreads more easily when blown upwards rather than directly.

- **Use Ceiling Fans**: You can also use ceiling fans along with ACs to spread the cool air to every corner of the room.

- **Optimal Temperature Setting**: It's always better to run the AC at 26 degrees and use the fan at a low speed, rather than running the AC at 28 degrees or higher. This also prevents adverse health effects.

**Health Risks from AC Use**

Many people have the habit of running the AC at 20 to 22 degrees and covering themselves with blankets when they feel cold. Long-term use at such low temperatures can cause several health issues. Lowering the room temperature significantly below normal body temperature can affect blood circulation and lead to various health problems.

- **Respiratory Issues**: The cold but dry air from the AC can affect the respiratory system, triggering conditions like asthma, allergies, and respiratory infections. Long exposure to cold air can also increase the risk of colds or flu. Ensure the AC filter is clean and gradually adjust the temperature to avoid these problems.

- **Skin Problems**: Long exposure to AC can deteriorate skin health, leading to loss of natural moisture, resulting in dry and flaky skin. Premature wrinkles and acne can also develop. To prevent these issues, regularly apply moisturizer.

- **Muscle and Joint Pain**: Staying in an AC room for extended periods can cause muscle cramps or joint pain, making it difficult to move. If you have arthritis or muscle stiffness, avoid prolonged exposure to AC.

- **Weakened Immunity**: Extended exposure to AC can weaken immunity, reducing your ability to fight diseases. The cold air puts pressure on the body, causing fatigue. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures can also lead to headaches and irritability
