EC reverts to ballot paper for UP Municipal Corporation polls

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Election Commission on Thursday announced that the UP Municipal Corporation polls will be conducted through the ballot paper method.

UP election body refused to use the EVMs manufactured before 2006, claiming that the older machines get impaired more often, which adversely affects the poll process.

"The EVMs manufactured before 2006 often get impaired and take a lot of time in getting fixed. We had appealed the central Election Commission to provide us newer machines to ensure hassle-free polling," said the state election commissioner.

"The central EC informed us about its inability to provide the required number of fresher EVMs so soon. Hence, we decided to go with the ballot paper system for the UP Nagar Nigam elections," he added.

It may be mentioned that several political outfits have been demanding to bring back ballot paper alleging malfunctioning in EVMs to benefit a particular party in the elections.
