Azamgarh: In an attempt to tackle the ongoing crisis, the district administration of Azamgarh has completely shut down the internet across the eastern Uttar Pradesh district, where communal tension broke out on Sunday last.

Although the situation was brought under control, the administration had decided to suspend mobile internet and broadband services till May 18 as a precautionary measure.

“The social media platforms were being misused to spread deceiving reports. Consequently, we decided to put internet services on hold till the situation was improved,” said Azamgarh District Magistrate (DM) Suhas L Y.

Highlights:

  • It was for the first time in UP that the internet was blocked.
  • Internet services were earlier banned in Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Manipur, Haryana, Jharkhand and Nagaland.
  • The services were halted on temporary basis whenever law and order went out of control.
