Tension in Sandeshkhali, Section 144 imposed; Human Rights Commission team talks to the villagers

Amid the ongoing tension in Sandeshkhali these days, Prime Minister Modi will be on a three-day tour in March, where he will address the women's conference. After the Sandeshkhali incident, BJP is continuously raising questions about women's safety.

Section 144 has been imposed, after which the movement of more than four people has been banned there.

A delegation going to Sandeshkhali under the leadership of BJP MP Locket Chatterjee was stopped midway and Locket Chatterjee was taken into custody by the police.

Top police officials including Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar reached Sandeshkhali and appealed to the people for peace. He assured the local people of taking action against the culprits.

Accusing TMC, BJP leader Sukant Majumdar said that Section 144 has been imposed only for BJP leaders, while TMC MLAs are roaming with the people.

Amid the ongoing controversy in Sandeshkhali, a team of the National Human Rights Commission reached there on Friday and talked to the villagers to gather facts about the allegations of sexual harassment of women.

The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that poor women were allegedly harassed and sexually assaulted in Sandeshkhali.

A large number of people in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district have accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Shaikh and his supporters of 'land grabbing and sexual harassment'.

NHRC said that it has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal and the Director General of Police asking them to submit a report within four weeks in the matter of violence in Sandeshkhali.
