Mahakavi Subramanya Bharati

Subramaniam Bharti (1882–1921) spread a new consciousness not only in Tamil literature. But also in the Tamil folk-mind as a poet, prose, journalist and patriot in just two decades of literary life. At the age of just five, he was deprived of his mother’s affection. His father was disciplinarian, so the child.

Subramanian did not have the freedom to mingle with his adult children. But he worked to transform his loneliness into his inner search. His first love for poetry grew in those days of solitude. Staying away from his father’s eyes, he used to study Tamil literature by hiding in the corners of temples. He has also studied Rambataram, the Tamil Ramayana in Kamban. He was very interested in reading, but his mind seemed less in text books, more in literature.
