Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has officially joined the DMK on February 27, 2026. He called it a return to his “Thaai Kazhagam,” the parent movement founded by C. N. Annadurai. The move comes just months before the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This decision changes the political mood in the state almost instantly.

Why O. Panneerselvam Joined DMK Now

O. Panneerselvam, widely known as OPS, made his entry into the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the presence of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin in Chennai. He described the party as his original ideological home. That single sentence carried weight.

OPS had been expelled from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 2022. Since then, his political path looked uncertain. He even contested independently in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with support from the NDA but did not win. Many believed his influence was shrinking. This move says otherwise.

What OPS Said After Joining

OPS did not hold back. He praised Stalin’s leadership and said the DMK government is being run with inclusiveness and political culture. He also criticized Edappadi K. Palaniswami, accusing him of running AIADMK in an autocratic style. That remark was sharp, and clearly intentional.

He said after Jayalalithaa’s death, many AIADMK cadres shifted towards DMK under Stalin’s leadership. According to him, the future of AIADMK looks weak if internal divisions continue. It was not a casual comment. It was political positioning.

The Election Angle No One Can Ignore

Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are scheduled in 2026. This timing matters. OPS still has influence, especially in southern districts and among the Mukkulathor community. His shift could strengthen DMK’s outreach in those regions.

The symbolism is strong too. A three-time Chief Minister moving to the rival camp months before elections creates momentum. DMK gains experience. OPS gains political stability. That balance might reshape alliances.

Meetings That Led to This Move

Interestingly, OPS and Stalin had a few public interactions in recent months. They met at the Assembly premises earlier this year. OPS even congratulated Stalin for completing five years in office. Those meetings now look less random and more strategic.

He also formally filled out the membership form at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters in Chennai. Supporters gathered in large numbers. It felt organised, not sudden.

Impact on AIADMK and State Politics

AIADMK has already seen internal fractures. OPS becoming the fourth MLA in recent times to shift sides adds pressure. For Palaniswami, this is not just a loss of a leader. It signals continued erosion.

For DMK, this is optics and arithmetic combined. A known face from the opposition joining sends a message that the ruling party is confident ahead of elections. Politics in Tamil Nadu rarely stays calm, and this move just stirred it again.

The coming months will tell whether this shift turns into real votes. But for now, the headline is clear. OPS is back in the Dravidian mainstream, and 2026 just became more interesting.
