Jagdish Singh Khehar sworn in as new Chief Justice of India

New Delhi: Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar was sworn in as 44th Chief Justice of India on Wednesday. The oath ceremony was administrated by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The 64-year-old, Khehar is a first Chief Justice of India from the Sikh Community and will head the Indian Judiciary for seven months till August 28, 2017.

  • He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on September 13, 2011.
  • Khehar's name was recommended by CJI T S Thakur who retired on January 3, 2017.

Jagdish Singh Khehar was a part of the bench which sent Sahara chief Subrata Roy to jail while hearing the matter relating to the refund of money invested by people in his two companies.

Justice Khehar has also headed a bench which had set aside the imposition of Presidents rule in Arunachal Pradesh in January.

About Jagdish Singh Khehar :

  • He was born on August 28, 1952 and completed his graduation in science from government college, Chandigarh in 1974.
  • Khehar was awarded the LLB degree by Punjab University, Chandigarh, in 1977 and LLM in 1979.
  • He was appointed as advocate in 1979.
