India remembers C V Raman on his death anniversary

Lucknow: One of the brilliant minds and great physicist of all time, Bharat Ratna Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was the first Indian to receive 'The Nobel Prize' in the field of Physics in 1930 for his work known as 'The Raman Effect'.

Popularly known as C V Raman, the pride of India was born in a poor family of 8 children in the former Madras Province of India, presently the state of Tamil Nadu.

He carried out the ground-breaking work in the field of physics where he studied scattering of light, which earned India its first Nobel Prize. He discovered that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the deflected light changes wavelength. Afterwards this phenomenon became popular as Raman scattering, results from the Raman effect.

#The intelligent and inquisitive Raman had passed his matriculation examination at the very young age of 11 and his F.A. examination (equivalent to today's Intermediate exam) at the age of 13, with scholarship.

#He was the first Asian and first non-white to receive Nobel Prize in the field of sciences.

#He was honoured with India's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna' in 1954.
