Government curtails Rakesh Asthana's tenure, moves him out of CBI

Rakesh Asthana and Alok Verma were sent on a forced leave after a bitter feud between them broke out in public. The government suspended both the officers on the basis of recommendation by Central Vigilance Commission.

New Delhi: After Alok Verma's removal as CBI director a week ago, Rakesh Asthana, the special director of CBI has been removed by the government after curtailing his tenure on Thursday, while, his deputy Joint Director AK Sharma and Deputy Inspector General Manish Sinha have been shifted to other offices.

The officers were transferred with immediate effect without any prior notice.

As for Alok, he has been appointed as director general of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security after being expelled from the Central Bureau of Investigation. AK Sharma has been appointed as additional DG of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). While Manish Sinha has been moved to Bureau of Police Research and Development, as per sources.

The CVC later suggested that Supreme Court should conduct a probe against Alok on suspected corruption charges and shielding corrupt officers.

If CBI doesn't find any evidence against Asthana in its FIR, he may stand a chance to become the CBI director in 2021 as his tenure ends after two years. High Court has ordered CBI to complete the investigation within 10 weeks.
