Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to serve Life sentence in Tihar jail
Apart from Sajjan Kumar, two other convicts Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokhar were sentenced to 10 years in prison. They surrendered before of the court earlier on Monday.
New Delhi: Former Congress and one of the convicts of 1984 riots, MP Sajjan Kumar on Monday surrendered before the Karkardooma court in Delhi.
Now, the convict of 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Sajjan will serve life sentence in Tihar Jail.
Sajjan Kumar (73) was convicted in the killing of five members of a family in Raj Nagar in Delhi. He has been instructed not to leave the city and to surrender by December 31.

Apart from Sajjan Kumar, two other convicts Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokhar were sentenced to 10 years in prison. They surrendered before of the court earlier on Monday.
On December 21, Delhi High Court rejected Sajjan Kumar’s plea seeking more time to surrender. In his plea, the 73-year-old said that he has a big family that includes besides his wife, three children and eight grandchildren and he wants time to meet them all before surrendering.

Why did the riot break out?
The 1984 riots took place after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984, after which five members of a Sikh family in the Delhi's Cantonment area were murdered. More than 3,000 people were killed after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984.
