Raghav Chadha (PC- Social Media)

Raghav Chadha vs AAP: Is speaking the “truth” in politics always rewarding? Can raising issues of the “common man” actually become a liability for a leader? And does standing apart from the party line come at the cost of one’s political career?

Today, all these questions revolve around one name—Raghav Chadha. Once the young face of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a future star campaigner, and one of Arvind Kejriwal’s most trusted associates… the same leader now finds himself under scrutiny within his own party.

A Big Decision by AAP—and a Bigger Political Message

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) recently took a significant step by removing Raghav Chadha from the post of Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha. In his place, Punjab MP Ashok Mittal has been given this responsibility. Not only that, the party also wrote to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, requesting that Chadha no longer be allotted time to speak on behalf of the party.

This move is not just an organizational reshuffle—it is being seen as a clear signal of rising tensions within the party.

From Closest Confidant to ‘Villain’

There was a time when Raghav Chadha was among the brightest and most prominent faces of AAP. He strongly articulated the party’s policies and regularly defended its positions in the media. However, over time, his role began to shift. While earlier he remained vocal on the party line, in recent months he appears to have shifted his focus toward “public interest issues.”

Public Issues—or Political Misstep?

Raghav Chadha raised several issues in Parliament that were directly connected to everyday concerns of citizens, such as:

• Validity and rollover of mobile data

• High prices of food, beverages, and baggage charges at airports

• Low wages of gig workers (Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit)

• Pressure of 10-minute deliveries and lack of social security

• The right to paternity leave

• Flight delays, exam paper leaks, and toll tax-related issues

Videos of these speeches went viral on social media and were widely appreciated by the public. However, this “people-centric politics” may not have gone down well within the party.

The Real Reason Behind AAP’s Discontent

According to party insiders, the biggest issue was Chadha’s “silence,” especially on matters directly related to Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia.

When both leaders were arrested in the alleged liquor policy case, Chadha was abroad. Even after returning, he did not openly comment on the issue. Furthermore, when the leaders received relief from the courts, Chadha was noticeably absent from party press conferences.

This distance increasingly began to concern the party leadership.

‘Soft Issues’ vs ‘Political Line’

Several AAP leaders, including Atishi and Sanjay Singh, openly criticized Chadha for focusing on “soft issues” while avoiding major political battles. The party believes that he did not strongly target the BJP or the Prime Minister, showed limited engagement in key party proposals, and stayed away from issues like impeachment motions.

Chadha’s Response: “Is Speaking for the Common Man a Crime?”

Raghav Chadha did not remain silent in the face of these allegations. In a video statement, he questioned:

“Is raising issues of the common man a crime? Have I committed any wrongdoing?”

He further asserted that his silence should not be mistaken for weakness, saying:

“I may be silent, but I am not defeated.”

Is AAP’s Politics Changing?

This entire episode raises several critical questions:

• Is AAP now prioritizing the “party line” over “common man” issues?

• Can building a strong personal image become a threat within a political party?

• Does Chadha’s approach reflect the future direction of politics?

What Lies Ahead?

For now, the distance between Raghav Chadha and AAP is clearly visible. However, in politics, relationships are rarely permanent—friends can become rivals, and rivals can turn allies. It will be interesting to see whether Chadha manages to regain his position within the party or if this distance signals a larger राजनीतिक shift.

Amid all this, one thing is certain—the story of this young leader, who claims to represent the “common man,” is far from over. In fact, it may just be the beginning of a new chapter.
