There is now a huge controversy over the statement given by opposition party leader Vijay Wadettiwar on BJP candidate Ujjwal Nikam in the Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra. In this matter, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also now targeted the opposition. Actually, a controversy has arisen due to the declaration of BJP's Ujjwal Nikam as its candidate. Fadnavis said the opposition was "concerned about Ajmal Kasab" and wanted to support terrorists by targeting Nikam. He said, "According to opposition leader Vijay Wadettiwar, Ujjwal Nikam insulted Kasab. Kasab terrorized the city and Congress is worried about him. Mahayuti is supporting Ujjwal Nikam and MVA is supporting Kasab, now you Decide who you should vote for."

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has replaced sitting MP Poonam Mahajan and given ticket to former Special Public Prosecutor Nikam from Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha seat. Who earlier came into limelight for his comments on 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab. His comments created a stir in legal circles and led to a political fight. Congress had made fun of BJP's choice. Senior leader Supriya Shrinet said that BJP has chosen a candidate whose "lie of serving biryani to 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab in jail has been exposed in the past." Congress's Vijay Wadettiwar was a big controversy at that time. When he said that Ajmal Kasab had not murdered police officer Hemant Karkare, but a policeman associated with BJP's ideological guru Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Ujjwal Nikam was a traitor who suppressed this fact. Shiv Sena has criticized his comments.

Ajmal Kasab was the only one captured alive among the 10 Pakistani terrorists who attacked Mumbai in 2008 and killed 166 people. He was kept in Mumbai jail for almost four years and was hanged in Pune in November 2012. In 2009, then government lawyer Nikam had declared that Kasab had asked for biryani while in jail. But after questions from the special court, he said that this was a story which he described as "fabricated". He had told the media, “Kasab never asked for biryani and the government never served him biryani. I hatched this conspiracy to break the emotional atmosphere being created in favor of Kasab during the hearing of the case.
