According to the latest research by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the risk of 'anti-microbial resistance' is increasing due to the excessive use of antibiotics which is really a bigger threat than any epidemic.

Every year 50 lakh people die in the world due to 'anti-microbial resistance' (AMR) and according to WHO if the situation continues like this, the death toll will cross one crore by the year 2050.

In today's article, we will tell you what is anti-microbial resistance and how it is increasing due to antibiotic and also the problems which may face by you after excessive use.

What is an antibiotic?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, antibiotics are drugs that inhibit the growth of bacteria or destroy them completely. Antibiotics are a type of antimicrobial agent used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Antibiotics target the structure and function of bacteria and stop their growth.

But the important thing is that antibiotics are not effective against viral infections.

The effect of antibiotics starts reducing on those who willingly take antibiotics from any medical stores without doctor concern when they feel a little unwell or have pain.

Actually, antibiotics eliminate bacterial infections. Due to its excessive use, good bacteria start reducing in the body. The immunity of the body starts weakening, due to which the ability to fight diseases becomes weak and the effect of medicines on the disease starts reducing.

What is AMR?

Antibiotics are used to kill bacteria. But if a person is using antibiotics repeatedly, then the bad bacteria develop immunity against that medicine. After this it becomes very difficult to fix it. This is called anti-microbial resistance (AMR).

In this situation, treatment is not done properly but toxins start accumulating in the liver. Besides, the risk of liver damage also increases. It starts with fatty liver and then gradually it turns into cirrhosis-fibrosis.

Problems which may be faced because of antibiotics:

  • It kills good bacteria in the body.
  • It may cause nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea
  • Vaginal yeast infection may occur in females
  • Kidney problem may occur
  • Any kind of allergy

When should antibiotics be taken?

No one should take medicine on their own or from a medical store without doctor's advice. The doctor first tests the patient and then prescribes antibiotics accordingly.

Antibiotics should be taken only when there is a bacterial infection, such as skin infection, tooth infection, etc. But take this also only on doctor's advice.
