Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the 22nd installment of the PM-Kisan scheme today, sending more than Rs 18,640 crore directly to over 9.3 crore farmer families. The money goes straight to farmers’ bank accounts using Direct Benefit Transfer. This scheme gives financial help to small and marginal farmers across India. Many farmers depend on this support for seeds, fertilisers, and daily needs, so this payment matters a lot.

What the PM-Kisan Scheme Actually Is

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme started in February 2019. It was created to give direct financial support to farmers. Under this programme, eligible farmers receive Rs 6,000 every year. The amount is divided into three equal installments and transferred directly into their bank accounts.

The idea behind the scheme is simple. Farmers often struggle with small but important expenses like buying seeds or fertilisers before the crop season begins. Even small financial help at the right time can reduce pressure. This scheme tries to solve that problem, at least partly.

Over the years the programme has grown very big. Crores of farmer families are now connected with it. The money reaches them without middlemen, which honestly makes a huge difference.

What Will Happen in the 22nd Installment

The 22nd installment is being released from Guwahati in Assam. Prime Minister Modi will transfer the funds during a public programme. More than Rs 18,640 crore will be sent to over 9.32 crore farmer families across the country.

This transfer happens through the Direct Benefit Transfer system. That means the money goes directly into the farmer’s registered bank account. No paperwork, no waiting at government offices.

A large number of women farmers will also receive the benefit. According to government data, more than 2.15 crore women farmers are part of this installment. For many rural households, this support becomes a small but steady financial backup.

How Much Money Farmers Have Received Till Now

Since the scheme began in 2019, the government has transferred a massive amount of money to farmers. Before this installment, more than Rs 4.09 lakh crore had already been sent to farmers’ bank accounts.

After the release of the 22nd installment, the total amount distributed will cross around Rs 4.27 lakh crore. That’s a huge number, honestly. It shows how big the scheme has become over the years.

Many farmers say the money helps them handle small agricultural costs. Things like buying fertilisers, paying for labour, or even covering family needs like school fees and medical expenses. It may look small on paper, but in rural areas it helps more than people think.

Why This Scheme Matters for Farmers

Agriculture still supports a large part of India’s population. But farming income is not always stable. Weather changes, crop failures, and rising input costs can quickly create financial pressure.

That is where schemes like PM-Kisan play a role. The money gives farmers a little financial breathing space. Some use it for farming inputs. Some use it for household needs.

Experts also say that direct cash transfers help strengthen rural economies. When farmers receive money, they spend it locally. That spending supports small shops, fertiliser dealers, seed sellers, and many other businesses in villages.

So the impact goes beyond just the farmer. It slowly spreads through the rural economy.

A Step Toward Stronger Rural Economy

Government officials say the scheme is meant to support small and marginal farmers who form the backbone of India’s agriculture sector. By providing regular financial help, the aim is to reduce dependence on loans and improve agricultural investment.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment toward the country’s annadatas, the farmers who feed the nation. He also noted that studies have shown positive impact on rural financial stability.

For millions of farmers across India, the 22nd installment arriving today will simply mean one thing. A little relief. Maybe seeds bought on time, fertiliser paid for, or a school bill cleared. Small support, yes. But sometimes small things are what keeps everything moving.
