Paneer Scam Exposed? Gujarat Fines Hotels & Destroys 615 Kg Food
Gujarat cracks down on fake paneer and unsafe food, fines eateries and destroys 615 kg substandard items in major food safety drive.
Paneer Scam (PC- Social Media)
Authorities in Gujarat fined multiple eateries and destroyed 615 kg of substandard food after finding violations in paneer labelling and quality. Many places were not clearly telling customers if they used real paneer or substitutes. New rules now force clear disclosure, or strict action happens. This is part of a bigger push to protect people from misleading and unsafe food.
What Triggered This Big Action
The drive was led by Food and Drugs Control Administration, and it was not small at all. Around 347 food places were checked across the state. That includes restaurants, dhabas, and even street food stalls.
Officials found that many outlets were not following proper rules. Some didn’t mention whether the paneer was real milk-based or made from substitutes. That sounds small, but it actually matters a lot for health and trust.
Because of this, fines worth ₹1,40,900 were collected from 17 places. Also, a huge 615 kg of food got destroyed. That food was not safe to eat, simple as that.
Paneer vs Analogue—Why It Matters
This whole issue is mainly about paneer. But not all paneer is the same, and that’s where confusion begins. Real paneer is made from milk, while analogue paneer is made using vegetable fats, starch, or other things.
The rule now is very clear. If it’s not real paneer, you cannot call it paneer. You must say “paneer analogue” or something similar. No hiding, no tricks.
Many shops were not following this, and customers didn’t even know what they were eating. That’s why this crackdown became necessary, honestly it was overdue.
Shocking Numbers From Inspections
If you look at the bigger data, it gets even more serious. In just three months, authorities collected over 2,000 food samples. Out of those, 74 were found substandard.
Paneer itself had a high failure rate. Out of 85 samples, 25 were not up to standard. That means nearly one-third had issues, which is kinda worrying.
Also, more than 4,000 food businesses were inspected. Notices were given, penalties were collected, and over 3,000 kg unsafe food was destroyed earlier too. So this is not a one-time action, it’s ongoing.
Cities Where Action Was Taken
Major cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, and Rajkot saw fines and strict checks. In Ahmedabad alone, many eateries were penalised for not displaying proper information.
Local bodies like municipal corporations are also involved. They are actively checking food quality and making sure rules are followed.
This shows the effort is happening at multiple levels, not just one department doing all the work.
What This Means For You
For normal people, this is actually good news. It means you will know what you are eating. No more guessing if your paneer dish is real or not.
It also pushes restaurants to be honest. When rules get strict, businesses usually become careful. And that’s what we want, safer food.
Still, being alert is always smart. If something feels off, it probably is. Better to question than ignore.
What Happens Next
Authorities have already emailed over 15,000 food businesses, telling them to follow the new rules. Anyone ignoring it will face legal action.
This means more checks are coming. More fines too, if needed. The goal is simple, clean food and clear information.
Things may take time to fully improve, but steps are happening. And slowly, you might see better quality in your plate.
