The Central Government has directed all the schools and higher educational institutes of the country to prepare digital study material in regional languages for all courses. The government has given 3 years for this. This decision has been taken so that students can do any course related to any stream in their regional language or mother tongue.

The central government has asked higher education regulatory bodies like - UGC (University Grants Commission), AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), NIOS (National Institute of Open Learning), IGNOU and NCERT to prepare study material. At the same time, premier institutions of the country like IITs, NITs and Central Universities have also been instructed to complete this work in the next 3 years.

While speaking with the media about this, the Education Ministry said that UGC, AICTE and School Education Department have been instructed to provide this material to schools and universities at the state level also.

This decision has been taken keeping in mind the National Education Policy (NEP, 2020). The objective of NEP is that students should have the option to continue studies in their regional language at the entry-level in schools and universities. This will also increase multilingualism in the country.

Officials associated with the Education Ministry said that studying in their regional language boosts the thinking ability and innovation of the students.
