Controversy Erupts: Congress Leader’s Remark on Multiple Wives Sparks Debate

In a recent political rally in Sailana, Madhya Pradesh, Congress leader Kantilal Bhuria made headlines with a controversial statement. Bhuria, who is the party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Ratlam, announced that men with two wives would receive financial aid of Rs 2 lakh if the Congress came to power. This bold promise has ignited a heated debate and drawn reactions from both supporters and opponents.

The Announcement

Addressing the crowd, Bhuria confidently declared, “After the Congress government comes to power, Rs 1 lakh will be credited to the account of every woman, as promised in our manifesto. Those who have two wives will receive an additional Rs 2 lakh.” The audience erupted in laughter, but the implications of his statement were far-reaching.

Party Leaders React

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and the party’s state unit chief, Jitu Patwari, were present during Bhuria’s speech. Patwari enthusiastically endorsed the announcement, calling it “terrific.” He emphasized that a person with two wives would receive double the financial aid, effectively doubling the impact of the Mahalaxmi scheme.

Congress Manifesto and Women’s Welfare

According to the Congress manifesto, women would receive Rs 8,500 per month under the Mahalaxmi scheme until they moved out of the below poverty line (BPL) segment. Bhuria’s proposal aimed to extend this support to women in polygamous marriages as well. However, critics argue that such a move could inadvertently encourage polygamy.

BJP’s Response

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wasted no time in condemning Bhuria’s statement. BJP MP Maya Naroliya accused Congress leaders of insulting women by making promises based on marital status. She asserted that women voters would respond fittingly during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Election Commission’s Role

The BJP promptly sought action from the Election Commission against the 73-year-old Congress leader. Narendra Saluja, the Madhya Pradesh BJP spokesperson, uploaded a clip of Bhuria’s statement, urging the commission to take necessary steps.

Bhuria’s Other Remarks

In addition to the controversial announcement, Bhuria criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address. He accused Modi of disrespecting tribals and remaining silent when a tribal person was mistreated in Sidhi. These remarks further intensified the political discourse in the region.

Upcoming Lok Sabha Polls

Ratlam, where Bhuria is contesting, will witness Lok Sabha polls during the fourth phase of the ongoing elections on May 13. The results are eagerly awaited and are expected to be declared on June 4.
