Navratri 2025 (PC- Social Media)
There are many families in India where women use LPG gas, but due to financial constraints, they don’t have regular connections. They are forced to purchase gas at inflated prices on the black market. However, this Navratri brings good news for such women.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the government will provide 25 lakh new free LPG connections during the festive season. With this move, the number of Ujjwala beneficiaries will increase to 10.6 crore households.
This scheme is not just about providing gas—it’s a big step toward changing the lives of poor families who still cook using firewood, dung cakes, or coal.
Powerful Step Toward Social Change
Navratri is traditionally celebrated as a festival honoring female power. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri described the new Ujjwala initiative as a Navratri gift for mothers and sisters.
He wrote on social platform X (formerly Twitter) that Prime Minister Narendra Modi honors women as embodiments of Goddess Durga.
What's Included in the Free Gas Connection?
The government has clarified that it will bear an expense of around ₹2,050 per new connection. This includes: One free LPG cylinder, One gas stove, One regulator, Other essential accessories.
In addition, the ₹300 subsidy on LPG refills currently provided by the Modi government will continue. This means Ujjwala beneficiaries will get cylinder refills for just ₹553.
Who Can Avail This Scheme?
To be eligible under Ujjwala 2.0, the applicant must meet certain criteria. Eligible categories include: Adult women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, Women belonging to SC/ST communities, Women from households that do not already have an LPG connection.

Ujjwala Yojana – A Journey That Began in 2016
Launched in 2016, the Ujjwala Yojana aimed to provide clean and safe cooking fuel to every poor woman in India. The initial target was to distribute 5 crore connections, but this target was quickly surpassed. As of now, over 10.33 crore families are part of the scheme. With the addition of 25 lakh new connections during Navratri, the total will rise to 10.6 crore households.
