A major naval incident has shaken global politics after the United States sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean. Iran says the ship was attacked without warning while sailing in international waters after visiting India. Tehran called the strike an “atrocity at sea” and warned the US it will regret the move.
The frigate reportedly carried around 130 sailors. Rescue operations later saved some survivors near Sri Lanka. But the attack has sharply raised tensions in the already heated conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Iran’s Strong Reaction To The Strike
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Aragchi, strongly condemned the incident. In a message posted on X, he accused Washington of attacking a ship that was travelling peacefully in international waters.
According to him, the warship was about 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores when it was struck. He described the attack as dangerous and irresponsible, warning that the United States had created a serious precedent at sea.
His statement carried a clear warning. He said the US would “bitterly regret” what it had done.
Ship Had Just Visited India
The warship IRIS Dena had recently completed a visit to India before the incident. It took part in the multinational naval gathering called the Milan International Fleet Review.
The event was hosted by the Indian Navy in the Bay of Bengal and saw ships from about 74 countries participating. The Iranian frigate was welcomed at Visakhapatnam during the exercise.
After the event ended on February 25, the ship began its return journey. Reports say it left the Indian port and was sailing through international waters when the strike happened near Sri Lanka.
How The Attack Happened
According to US officials, an American submarine fired a torpedo at the Iranian vessel. The attack reportedly happened off the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
The torpedo strike sank the ship. Defence officials later confirmed that the United States was responsible for the attack.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth openly acknowledged the incident. In his statement, he said the Iranian warship believed it was safe in international waters, but it was destroyed by a submarine torpedo.
Military experts say this is a rare moment in modern naval warfare. It is believed to be the first time since World War II that the US sank an enemy ship using a submarine-fired torpedo.
Rescue Operations After The Sinking
Soon after the attack, rescue teams rushed to the area. The Sri Lanka Navy launched operations to find survivors.
So far, about 30 sailors have been rescued from the water. They were taken to Karapitiya Hospital in the port city of Galle for treatment.
Officials are still searching for more survivors. Many sailors were reportedly aboard when the ship went down, which makes the situation deeply worrying.
Rising Tensions In The Region
This incident comes during a wider conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. The current crisis began on February 28 after coordinated strikes targeted Iranian missile and nuclear facilities.
Those attacks reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, which dramatically escalated the conflict.
Now the sinking of IRIS Dena has pushed tensions even higher. Military movements across the Middle East are increasing, and many countries are watching the situation very carefully.
For now, the world is waiting to see what happens next. Because when naval warships start sinking each other, things usually don’t stay quiet for long.
